GABA powder - 100 grams

Gamma-amino butyric acid, abbreviated as GABA, is an amino acid. GABA occurs naturally in our body as a neurotransmitter. It is composed of glutamic acid through decarboxylation under the influence of the enzyme glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD). GABA is stored in tiny bubbles of chemicals (vesicles) at the endings of axons (the extensions of a neuron = nerve cell). Neurons sensitive to GABA are distributed throughout our brain.

Neurotransmitters are molecules used for the communication of signals from one neuron to another. GABA is the most important neurotransmitter for repressing other neurons (inhibitor), while glutamate is the most important stimulating neurotransmitter (excitator). In a normal situation, a good balance is achieved between repressing and stimulating neurotransmitters, producing an inhibiting or stimulating result, respectively. This balance can be disturbed by numerous factors, causing the level or effectiveness of GABA to decrease and glutamate to take over, as it were. When taken as a dietary supplement, GABA produces a relaxing and calming effect, while promoting mental alertness and clarity at the same time. GABA also helps suppress movement impulses and thoughts that ‘go around in circles’. It has been indicated that GABA can alleviate neuropathic pain (nerve pain).

A diminished GABA level is associated with complaints such as anxiety, spastic colon, irritability, insomnia, agitation, heightened sensitivity to stress, panic attacks, epilepsy, hyperactivity, and increases in cortisol levels. Anyone affected by any of the above complaints will benefit from using GABA.

GABA can be found in the following foods: broccoli, spinach, seeds, fresh nuts, potatoes, bananas, onions and free-range eggs.
